17.1 Safari Arrow keys Smooth Scrolling Not Working

With Mac Studio on I mistakenly swiped across extended Mac keyboard and now my arrow keys no longer function as smooth scrolling. I've looked through the shortcuts in system settings and cannot locate smooth scrolling. I don't like jumping down a whole section of the page, which only stops arrow scrolling, when I hold both the fn key and the F14

Where will I find how to reset for smooth arrow scrolling? I've spent probably an hour inSystem settings and have given up

If this doesn't help...

  1. "Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Keyboard.
  2. Click Shortcuts.
  3. From the bottom of the preferences window, select the checkbox “Use keyboard navigation to move focus between controls.”'

How about this?

Go to accessibility preferences and make sure that Full Keyboard Access is turned OFF.

Just checking, ave you donethese???

Use keyboard function keys on Mac

The top row of keys on an Apple keyboard are called function keys. Function keys can be used to perform keyboard shortcuts or to control system features, as indicated by an icon on the key. For example, you can use F11 as a keyboard shortcut to show the desktop or to decrease your computer’s volume.

By default, keyboard function keys are set up to control system features. To use the function keys for keyboard shortcuts, you must also press and hold the Fn key or the  key (depending on your Mac model or if you’re using a Magic Keyboard). For example, to show the desktop, you must press Fn-F11 or -F11.

If you use the keyboard function keys for keyboard shortcuts more often than for system features, you can set an option so that you don’t have to press and hold the Fn key or the  key.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Keyboard  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts on the right, then click Function Keys in the list on the left.
  3. Turn on “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.”

Have you tried resore a certin dte using TM???

Oh okay, so holding the fn and F11 then the function keys does work on volume up/down. It also is working on arrow scrolling. as well as the (MC) Mission Control key. My suspicion is that you have solved my problem, and now I wish I'd have known this prior to returning the keyboard. But if the support team wasn't aware of this, you, BDAqua are a star. Thanks very much.

And yes I restored back to Oct 6th I believe it was, but I think I'll do a backup to restore to the latest state.

BTW do you know if when backing up I am only backing up incidental data? Or am I using a ton of space each time? Perhaps there's a setting for that too. Nope I don't see one.

Hope your Halloween went well, we sat out in the garage opened for kids, and handed out far too much candy, but we fooled them again, by adding mostly sugar-free candy. A wicked trick 👻 heheh

BDAqua,

Wholeheartedly appreciate your help here, but that's too complicated for this old brain. And I think we may be speaking to two different issues

I want slow smooth scrolling until I stop holding the arrow up or down. You are speaking to that bizarre arrow scroll locked on. I have had experience with that and it is not fun nor funny.

Oddly enough, yesterday after having changed a keyboard setting, once I restarted it worked.

However now the F3 key which used to display all of the open apps does not work and I don;t recall where to find that or what its called.

I am not usually messing with much of anything. I use it as it comes, but now I'm forced to minimize all open apps to find the desktop view of all open apps. Any ideas?

Many Thanks

BDAqua,

Well I would have to say like my Father used to say, "Almost nearly, but not quite hardly" 😂

Somehow I have changed a setting which does what Mission Control is now doing, by placing all of the open apps to the left side of my desktop window. But I used to have it show all of the open apps behind the app that I am working with presently. Trouble is I can't see them as well now, as when it showed all apps spread across my desktop. And the only way I knew how to do that was (thank you for informing me of the name of the key) tapping on the (MC key) Mission Control key, showing 3 rectangles above the F3 on that key. Now when I click on that MC key nothing happens. And I'd like for that to happen again.

Again I say that I was cleaning the keyboard when this happened, so its all my responsibility, but I can't duplicate that cleaning series of strokes again, as you may well imagine.

Still seeking instruction if possible and many thanks thus far

I guess I can't leave this page without all of my draft being erased?

So it appears with the new keyboard literally nothing has improved. The arrows don't work (except for very sketchy jumping erratically), the volume buttons are completely ineffective, F12 up volume does nothing, F11 decrease causes the browser window to jump up to the top of desktop and literally disappear while the view of desktop takes its place, the F10 off volume does nothing, the F14 and the Command F14 is not the scroll key lock/unlock button, the Mission Control (F4) button does not show the apps neatly laid out across the desktop while in place of the open app one is working in.

A brand new keyboard with no changes at all. I'm grateful but if Apple Support has no knowledge of these default failures. I am believing for the time being that it is the Sonoma 14.1 update.

If only I knew how to roll back from my last TM backup. And if only the updates were dated so knew when to roll back to. I updated from Sonoma 14.0

What a mess until this is figured out. Sorry I couldn't report a fix

You can use Control-F14 to manage Scroll Lock. Keep in mind, you may need to press and hold the Fn key first.

Enter or leave Mission Control

  • From a trackpad: To enter, swipe up using three fingers. To leave, swipe down. You can turn off or change the trackpad gesture in Trackpad settings.
  • From a keyboard: To enter or leave, press the Mission Control key  (or use the Control Strip) or press Control-Up Arrow. You can change the keyboard shortcut in Desktop & Dock settings.

If you enter Mission Control on a second display, only the open windows and spaces you’re working with on that display are shown.
