I download like every other update but it never completes and causes my laptop to have black screen and be difficult to access anything. I have tried about 6 times and have problems after each attempt. I am nervous about trying again. What would be the downside of not installing this upgrade?

Try to upgrade from safe mode: Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. However, first, before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac. If you have an external storage device, you can use it to back up your Mac with Time Machine.
