Keyboard doesn’t appear so can’t connect to Roku for airplay

When trying to cast to Roku via airplay, code appears on tv screen but keyboard doesn’t appear on iPhone screen. Nothing will make it appear, so code can’t be entered. I’ve been unable to find a work around.

How do I operate my keyboard from my IPad or IPhone instead of using the Apple TV keys? Keyboard on AppleTV -difficult to navigate. One time a message on AppleTV gave instruction (very fast) for me to open my other Apple device to share/connect to AppleTV using my IPad or IPhone using one of the two keyboards for easier use AND saw larger type. AirPlay tries to connect but then it doesn’t. Been using AirPlay on this Roku device, even just this morning it worked. This evening I am trying to connect and it looks like it is happening, the device name gets a check mark, tv screen goes black as if it’s about to change and then in a few seconds it goes back to the airplay main screen. Wifi strong and on same network. Softwares up to date on both devices. Already restarted everything multiple times. what is going on????
