Are his pictures on a Mac and backed up with iCloud Photos? Do you have a Photos Library that you have synced with your iCloud Photos account?

The libraries themselves, the ones on your Macs, don't contain account information. So, either way, I would start by copying the DadsPhotos Library to a hard drive. Then you can copy them to your Mac, and you'll have two libraries that you can switch between. iCloud will sync the Library that you call the System Library (in preferences). You can only have one Library be the System Library and connected to iCloud.

If you want them all in one library, you can open your own Library and choose File>Import and select the new DadsPhotos Library-- all the pictures and most of the info (not Projects, for instance) will be copied into your Library.

You can also make a brand new empty Library (with Photos closed, option-click the Photos icon) and import both libraries into the new one.

Without a hard drive you can instead sign on to his account and let Photos sync with a new library you create or with your current library. Personally, I'd prefer the having the control (and backup) of using the external drive.
