If your Mac is logged into iCloud, using the same Apple ID as your phone, I believe that it will receive iMessages.
In the Messages application, if you go into Messages > Settings…, there is an iMessage tab. On that tab it shows your Apple ID, and the phone numbers and e-mail addresses at which you can be reached for messages.
There is also a checkmark to "Enable Messages in iCloud". I haven't turned that one on yet. Presumably it does a more complete synchronization of messages (maybe synchronizes history?!?) than whatever my iPhone and Mac are doing now.

SMS/MMS messages are a cell phone thing, and the Mac isn't a cell phone. A Mac can send and receive SMS/MMS messages with the help of an iPhone. Basically, the Mac talks to the iPhone – and the iPhone does all of the talking to the cell phone network.
