Play music on iPhone, does not update plays or last played on Apple Music for Mac

iPhone 14 Pro Max

iOS 17.1

Sonoma on Mac

Apple Music subscription recently bundled into Apple One

So when I play music on my iPhone, I later attach it to my Mac for charing and syncing. However, if I play 10 songs on a given day, it does not update the number of plays or the date and time the song was last played. Is there something I need to do on my phone, my Mac, or both so that the number of plays and last played both get updated after every period I play songs on my iPhone.

This worked for me too. iOS 17.6.1 and macOS Sonoma 14.6.1.

My process was:

  1. Hard restarted iPhone 15 Pro.
  2. In Apple Music on the Mac, File > Update Cloud Library.
  3. In Apple Music on the iPhone, played a song from my library.
  4. After song finished, I checked back with Apple Music on the Mac and that song had updated. I didn’t even have to choose Update Cloud Library.

Seems like a success. I have an Apple Music Family Plan, but I tried this with both devices logged into the same Apple ID.

Thanks, Brandisfender!

I'm having the same issue after update to iOS 17. Play counts are not updating on other devices from iphone or ipod touch.

At the moment, itunes music doesn't seem to recognise that I'm using it on multiple devices. In the past, if I tried to play music on my iphone (for instance) while music was already playing on another device, I would get a warning message and music would stop playing on one of the devices.

However, this morning I tried playing music simultaneously on four devices (iMac, iphone, ipod touch and apple music on a PC) and had no messages and music kept playing on all devices at the same time.

I wondered if my apple ID was not working properly, but checked and I seem to be properly logged-in on all devices.

Furthermore, If I add a new album on one of my devices (all four), it appears on all my devices (all four), so apple ID is presumably fine. And if I manually update the music library on my Mac or PC (file/library/update icloud music library) the libraries update properly on my phone and ipod (and MAC/PC).

It just seems to be the play counts that don't update properly to icloud from my iphone or ipod. Up to installing iOS 17, the play counts updated automatically at least once a day, usually after the first play on iphone/ipod. So far, neither the plays from iphone or ipod have synced for two days.

I tried un-toggling the "Sync Library" on my iphone and then turning the "Sync Library" on again, hoping this might force a fresh sync. But it didn't.

I installed another update this morning that claimed to solve some bugs (icloud music problems was not listed as one of the issues), but, so far, there is no evidence that this update has helped.

One thing I did note this morning while looking at icloud settings on my phone, was that it asked me to agree to new terms and conditions for icloud. Again, no evidence yet that this has helped solve the play count issue.

Good morning. I have iphone Pro Max 13 and currently using itunes 12.13.1.3 version. I too was having same issue as many of you have posted. My itunes was not being updated with the plays from my iphone. However, what I have discovered is, if I start the itunes first THEN connect my phone to my desktop pc via usb, the play lists update everytime. It has been working for 2 weeks now so I am very happy.

So start itunes first then connect your phone. I know many of you have different devices with this issue and I hope my discovery might help with your issues. Good luck

I have the same problem on my iPhone 14 Pro. It seems that it happened after updating to iOS 17.1. The songs appear on the "Last played" playlist on my iPhone, but doesn't appear on the same playlist on any of the other devices that are synced with my Apple Music library. I have set the library to sync and the device to log to the last play log. It also seems that the last played albums appear on my "Listen now"-lists in Apple Music. I've set up so that my favourite songs are shuffled playing based on how long it is since I've heard them, so this is really annoying.

I've got this sort of thing too.

I've got playlists on my iMac which update according to play count. For example, I'm currently on one called 'Under 3,' a list that has all the songs with play counts of 2 or less. It's so I go through all my music.

It's 'based' on my iMac and that is currently down to 22 songs. However, on iPhone, it's still at a couple of thousand, despite me playing Music daily from there. It hasn't updated since the old Queen died. On iPad, it's something else entirely.

I'm signed in with exactly the same Apple ID (it's the only one linked to Apple Music), all the sync boxes are checked all over and I've updated the Apple Music library from iMac, millions of times. I've signed out of my iMusic account and back in, to no avail. It's been going on (or not going on!), for many months, if not longer, so it's not an ios17 issue I'm guessing. However, what it IS, is very, very annoying.

My play count sync stopped at October 24. All the music I listen on iPhone (12 PRO), Apple Watch (Series 8), iPad (6th Gen), and even MacBook Air (M2) doesn't upload to my Music App on iMac (4k 2017).

I always keep them updated. And have already restarted all my devices.

Done a few tips here and there, but none of my devices upload the play count to the cloud and can be seen on my Music App on iMac. Only the songs I listen on the iMac change the count and register the "Last time played".

October 24 is when play count stopped updating for me when songs play on my iPhone or Apple Watch. I have my itunes on a Windows PC where I can see the play counts and last played. Smart Playlists seem to sync between devices when I change the sort order and add or delete songs But regular playlists do not when changing order manually. I am not sure if there is a way to see play count on iPhone??

There’s no option for a ‘forced sync’ from iPad/iPhone, is there?

I’ve tried sync-ing my iMac version to iCloud, then logging out of Music on iPhone, then back in, but the play-count-based playlist I was trying to update, came back in exactly the same as the previous iPhone version had been.

I wondered, if you delete Apple Music from your iPhone (in my case), then re-load everything, would that come from the Apple Music ‘in the cloud’?

but that’s not, even if it was likely to work, given my aforementioned problem, a generally useable solution.

Apple needs to look at its claims for Music, sync across devices and either remove that lie, or make it work.

Ok ,i have samsung note 20 ultra and untill 8 november everthing was fine ,apple do a poxy update ,and bang nothing works i didnt want to sign out as i know after every update to the music app you can never ever be able to upload your music that stupid icon in top right never toggle,s to red so you aint getting your music till it does ,But every one will have same issue as i noticed as in evety app you use you have to have permmissions .Right so go in to your phone settings scroll down to apps ,click on it ,scroll down to apple music all apps are in alphabetical order ,so when you get to apple music you will find within the app permmissions you need to go in to that and toggle allow music and audio ,but you wont find those 2 options as apple have left them out and as we all know without music and audio permmisdions none of your music or add to music will gk red it will be greyed out ,and no matter what you do ,sync music on you computer mac phone ie iphone it wont upload your music ,well done apple another stupendous mess up as usual ,but wait dont call apple suppodt there as thick as pig muck ,but we will get an update to rectify there screw up in 6/8 months till then be very ****** off like md as all my music dissapeared in heart beat soon as i signed out ,why roll out an update till you know the **** thing will work properley ,typical apple useless as ever
