Hi Ewalani
welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.
Am no expert in this area, yet your question surely deserves some response.
Re: "how can I update software enough to get keynote"
Identify your MacBook Air model - Apple Support
says
For 2013 models : Newest compatible operating system: macOS Big Sur
So seems your Mac cannot update beyond any Big Sur updates.
What's new in the updates for macOS Big Sur - Apple Support
says
macOS Big Sur 11.7.10 is the newest Big Sur update.
(You can check your version: Click black apple at top left of menu bar > About this Mac )
See: How to: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

Re: "I just really need to install keynote or power point is there a way to do this"
The way I understand it:
the App Store will only install compatible versions of any Apple apps we attempt to download.
If your Mac is updated to MacOS 11.7.10, you could likely download a compatible version of Keynote.
The "Keynote" webpage (link below) links to the App store ...
(you can click "version history" to see the earlier versions).

All the best :-)
