iMovie requires read & write permissions to open

I'm trying to restore my iMovie Library from a LaCie hard drive I use for backup (NOT TimeMachine). When I restored the backup, iMovie displayed a notification saying iMovie requires read and write permissions. I have already turned this on the "get info" window & granted access to myself. No one else uses this computer. I set the permission to read and write. But still it cannot open the library.

I'm using Sonoma 14.1 OS & iMovie 10.3.10.

Make sure that the external drive is properly formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS. Improper formatting can cause permissions issues. Be aware that if you need to reformat the drive that will cause all data to be erased on the drive. So, you first must remove all data from the drive, including the iMovie library, and then reformat.


Another thing that you can look at is to Control-click on the external drive's icon and click on Get Info from the drop down menu. At the bottom of the Get Info box will be a box that says "Ignore Owership on this volume".



If the box is unchecked, then put a check mark in it. (You will first need to click on the little lock icon and enter your administrator password See if that cures it.
