Camcorder

I have an old Sony Video Hi8 Handycam, Model CCD-TRV58. What do I need to download/transfer my Hi8 videos onto my MacBook? The model of my laptop is a MacBook pro 14inch 2023 version

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 13.6

Hi, Bjav, as Grant Bennett-Alder posted, your camcorder doesn’t have digital outputs, just analog ones, eg S-video, composite + stereo audio, so

you’d have to buy a capture device that connects to USB plus buying a copy of iMovie and getting to know and use that as well… Elgato made a nice kit that worked for me, was $129-ish ( probably more now though) , transfers would happen/be done in real time, so a 60 min tape would take 60 minutes, if you have a ton of tapes, you might be better served by having a video transfer/conversion company do that for you… however If you have loads of time and some patience then go for it— give it a try, plus seeing as how the cable in the kit has USB-A output, you’d also need a usb-A female to usb-c adapter plug… hopefully Elgato has kept the software updated enough that it.’ll work on Catalina or better and on your 2023 MacBook Pro

I just checked today, and yup, it sure does 👍 at least up to Big Sur or later…

Based on a a user manual I found online, your camcorder does not have any digital outputs, at all.

The Mac can not accept any video OUTPUT from a camcorder. The data rates and timing involved are ferocious. With a different camcorder, it might feature digitized Video on a USB or Firewire connection to the computer.

So the only way to transfer your recordings is by capturing the camcorder playback. This requires substantial additional Hardware for a one-off transfer.

You may be better served by having a video transfer service perform this operation.
