I am a new Mac user and got my m2 air 13 yesterday. Updated the OS to Sonoma after booting. I needed urgently to create a guest account, and after enabling it in users and groups, I can't find it on the login screen when I lock the screen. Searched endlessly for a solution and couln't rectify it. Help! As I would need to be giving my Mac to a friend and I want him to use guest

In case it wasn't clear, you have to disable File Vault to do what you want.
The lock screen and the log in screen are two different things. You will only see multiple users from the log in screen.
You can enable Fast User Switching.
When you hover the cursor over your name while in the log in screen, the Guest User should appear. But, you have File Vault enabled so you would have to enter the File Vault password.
Went you Click on the Guest User account Name
You get a Sub Windows as per illustration below
Turn on the Options you decide are appropriate

Normally and generally, the Guest Account is automatically Turned ON
It also would need purposeful action by you the Administrator of this computer to Turn it OFF

Something weird is happening. So I disabled file vault already ( the following happened even before disabling filevalult) : After enabling guest user, I restarted and when it came back on, I could see guest user on the Lock Screen. However, once I log in to my account and then lock the pc myself, I don't see guest user. It seems guest user only shows when I restart. Why is that? I'm really confused
Oh wow! So I can only give a guest/friend my laptop by restarting first? If that's the case, then pardon my question. I am a windows user and I just lock the screen to change users.
But this seems inconvenient because I would have to let go of my session, restart and then hand over to the guest
I'm having this same issue.
I only can see the option on the Lock Screen to login into the Guest account after a restart. If I login into my normal account, the option is no longer available on the Lock Screen.
I have FileVault turned off.
I have quite a few Macs. All running the latest Sonoma release. I think only one of the Macs (an M2 Mac mini) is having this issue. It's a shared Mac that I need the ability for others to hop on and quickly check some things on the internet via Safari.
My issue is that I can't find the option on the login screen. I have already turned it on and yet I can't find Guest User on my login screen. See pic below
According to the OP's screen shot the Guest User is already enabled.
