Superdrive not showing in Finder

I'm running macOS Monterey 12.7 on a mid 2015 MacBook Pro. OS is up to date.

My Superdrive always worked fine, but I plugged it in today and it doesn't show up in Finder.

I have:

  • Force Quit/relaunched Finder
  • Rebooted the Mac

Still nothing.

The SuperDrive shows up in system information, but not in Finder [site won't let me attach screenshot].

Any ideas anybody?

my superdrive is always connected to my iMac. but it only shows up in finder after I have inserted a disc. have you tried that?

and also, to verify that it is being recognized, is there a "CDs & DVDs" selection in your system preferences?

thanks to all for your suggestions :)

I've tried them all, including restarting the Mac and holding down on the mouse, as well as the Terminal command[s]

I've also tried connecting the Superdrive to my iMac and repeating all the possible solutions as well as using the 'eject' key on the Magic Keyboard. When I issue the Terminal command, I can hear the drive trying to eject the disc, but nothing more happens.

It doesn't show up in Finder on either machine.

I suspect the CD is somehow jammed in the drive, so is probably only going to be useful as a coaster if I can ever get it out. Unlike standard CD drives, there doesn't seem to be any 'emergency' manual eject - which takes the form of a hole to stick an unfolded paper clip in.

I can't even see how to dismantle the drive [which is presumably dead meat now] so I can at least retrieve my CD.

Any suggestions welcome!

Hi there

Thanks for your prompt response :)

I've looked at finder preferences and CDs, DVDs & iPods is checked.

There is a rather precious audio CD in the drive [which I would dearly like to eject]

The SuperDrive is plugged in directly to the MacBook's USB port, and I've tried using both ports with the same result.

Do you know a way of ejecting a CD if the drive doesn't appear in Finder?

AFAICT, superdrives were never intended to be dismantled.

Any suggestions welcome!

you likely need to destroy the superdrive to get the disc out of it. but, of course, that would also likely involve damaging the disc. however, you would be no further behind than if you recycle the drive with the disc still in it.
