The SuperDrive has to be plugged directly into a port. No hubs. You will need a USB to USB C adapyer.
The empty SuperDrive will not show up in Finder like an external drive. Only the inserted CD or DVD will show up on you iMac.
As den explained, you need to insert a disk before it will show up in the Finder or in Disk Utility. One thing, make sure it is right side up, black side down.
I'm using the USB-C to USB Adapter I bought on the Apple website, and I tried it in USB-c and Thunderbolt ports. Still nothing. I went to disk utility and I don't see the dvd drive there either
