Importing an Apple Savings qfx file into Quicken for Windows does not work

The qfx file created by the Apple Wallet app (Wallet —> Savings Account —> Documents —> Statements —> <month-year —> Export Transactions) does not work with Quicken for Windows. Quicken reports the error "Quicken is unable to complete your request. [OL-221-A]". The Quicken connection log reports "Not all required fields present. Pbject: BANKACCTFROM missing tag: BANKID".

Others have reported this issue on the Apple and Quicken community forums with no resolution. Is Apple aware of this issue and is there any plan to fix it?

Thanks for the response and suggestion. I started with Quicken support and the representative was very competent and helpful. They confirmed it was an issue with the qfx file and that Apple Card will need to fix the issue. Quicken directed me to contact Apple for further assistance. There are two very helpful posts on this topic in the Quicken community:

  1. https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7934171/apple-savings-account-quicken-import-throws-ol-221-a-error
  2. https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7886172/i-am-receiving-error-ol-221-a-when-trying-to-add-apple-card-transactions-download-to-quicken

Based on these, Apple needs to do the following for the qfx file import to work for the Apple Savings account:

  1. Add the BANKID tag and value to the qfx file
  2. Work with Quicken to update the Quicken Financial Institution List so that Quicken will allow Savings accounts for "Apple Card WC". The current entry only permits Quicken credit card accounts to be associated with "Apple Card WC"

Thanks. I have submitted feedback to Apple and will update this thread if I hear back from them.

In the mean time I am working around the issue by making the following changes to the Apple Savings qfx file:

  1. Change the value of the <INTU.BID> tag from 18940 (which is the value for the financial institution "Apple Card WC") to a value for a financial institution that supports bank accounts. The list of valid values for financial institutions is available in the Quicken Financial Institution List. For example, I am using "<INTU.BID>67811".
  2. In the <BANKACCTFROM> section, add the BANKID tag and value. My understanding is that the value needs to be the bank routing number for the financial institution designated by the <INTU.BID> tag. For example, I am using "<BANKID>314074269".

The first time you import the modified QFX file, Quicken will think the file is from the bank you designated in the <INTU.BID> value, but you can choose any Quicken account to import the transactions.

Hope this helps others while Apple gets this sorted out.

Based on your experience with Apple Support I would recommend submitting feedback to Apple. First level support tech can indeed be clueless. The Feedback terms state that Apple will read every submission. As you probably already know Goldman Sachs Bank administers the Apple Card and Apple Savings accounts so they would likely have to be involved as well. You also might try contacting a Goldman Sachs Apple Card specialist at 877-255-5923

Keep us informed. I’m still waiting for real Quicken Direct access so transactions can be downloaded at will.

I called Apple Card support. The representative I spoke with tried to help me but had no idea what Quicken was. I asked to be transferred to someone technical who does know about Quicken, but the representative did not understand what I was asking for. I requested the representative to escalate the call to a manager - he tried twice but could not get a manager on the line. After 20 minutes of waiting, I finally gave up. It was a very frustrating and disappointing experience.

The only difference I can see between the Apple Credit Card transaction download response (<CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1>, the one that works in Quicken) and the Apple Savings Account transaction download response (<BANKMSGSRSV1>, the one that DOES NOT work in Quicken) is that is that the Apple Savings file doesn't include the <AVAILBAL> field.

<AVAILBAL>

     <BALAMT>18842.26

     <DTASOF>20231231120000[0:GMT]

</AVAILBAL>

Judging by the amount shown here, that's the credit limit balance, so no reason to expect one in savings account statement.

The individual transactions are almost the same in both message requests with the 'Memo' field featuring in the savings account transaction data but not in the credit card.

Credit Card Account <CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1> transaction example:

<STMTTRN>

<TRNTYPE>DEBIT

<DTPOSTED>20231230120000[0:GMT]

<TRNAMT>-0.99

<FITID>fee2bd93-691d-4de4-8120-dcb284fe95

<NAME>APPLE.COM/BILL ONE APPLE PARK WA

</STMTTRN>

Savings account <BANKMSGSRSV1> transaction example:

<STMTTRN>

<TRNTYPE>CREDIT

   <DTPOSTED>20231218120000[0:GMT]

<TRNAMT>0.89

<FITID>522e01bc-59d8-4f22-99a7-c360ed7a8b

<NAME>Daily Cash Deposit

<MEMO>Rewards

</STMTTRN>

These look like very simple file structures, no obvious differences in the files from Apple. If I was to hazard a guess as a layman, I would say that Quicken has an issue with its BANKMSGSRSV1 parsing that it doesn't have with its CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1 parsing.

Bryan, I have been using the 'USAA" work around for all of 2023 without issue and have sucessfully load all my apple savings .qfx data. However, as of 01/01/2024 I am now receiving the error message "Quicken is currently unable to verify the finanacial inistitution information for this download. Please try again later."

"<INTU.BID>67811". is still showing as a valid entry in Quicken Financial Institution List. And USAA's routing number "<BANKID>314074269" hasn't changed. Any idea what is happening?
