How to undo "clean up selection" on a desktop folder

I had a folder on my desktop with over 300 files in it, it was very important but I accidentally clicked "clean up selection" (without knowing what it did) and 200 of those files are now gone and I don't know where or if they have been deleted or hidden. I need to find them and have them back. Please I really need help.

Look in the Trash. If there you can "Put Back"

Do a Spotlight search for the files by full name, partial name or file extension.

Might the folder/files be in iCloud?

If those fail, you'll need to rely on your backups, or file copies, to get the files back.
