Upgrading to the new iMac

I currently have a 2017 iMac 27 inch with a 27 inch Apple Thunderbolt display, equally as old or older.

My iMac no longer supports the latest operating system OS14 Sonoma and I am looking to upgrade both the computer and the display.

I see the only new iMac that was released this month is a 24 inch, and I see the current Studio display available as a 27 inch and I’m wondering if there are iMacs and displays available in the same sizes.

There are no new 27” iMac’s at this time, plus only Apple knows if a 27” iMac will be available in the future.

Considering that macOS Ventura will continue to revive security updates for at least two more years. I would just keep using that setup for a while longer.

Another option to consider, is a Mac Mini or a Mac Studio and two Apple 27” Displays.

If it is not on the list then you should contact Apple's online store directly (we are all end users just like you).

If I was in your situation, I would not buy a 24" iMac if you want a 27" display. Buy either a Mac mini or Mac Studio, configure it with the amount of RAM you need (16 GB is more than enough for most everyday users) and then purchase a 27" display. You also may want to consider looking on Apple's Refurbished store if you want to save money and have no downside.

As a substitute for a 27" iMac, one could put together a system consisting of

  • A M2 Pro Mac mini or M2 Max Mac Studio
  • A 27" 5K Apple Studio Display
  • An Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse

Unfortunately, the Apple 5K display, keyboard, and mouse together cost about as much as it used to cost to get an entire 27" 5K Retina iMac that included a computer and software! Third-party 27" 5K displays are fairly scarce and expensive, too. I think the LG and Samsung ones are it.

So a lot of people are going with 27"-32" 4K (3840 x 2160) third-party monitors and running them in Retina modes.

First, the new iMac comes with up to 24GB of unified memory. My current iMac has 64GB of RAM. How does 24GB unified compare to 64GB of RAM?

With Apple Silicon machines,

  • You can't expand RAM after purchase. Whatever the machine comes with is what it will always have.
  • The RAM is shared between the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine.

RAM options depend more on the processor chip than on the Mac model containing that chip.

  • M2: 8, 16, or 24 GB (current M2 Mac minis and 13"/15" M2 MacBook Airs)
  • M3: 8, 16, or 24 GB (new 24" iMac and new entry-level 14" MBP)
  • -----------------------------------
  • M2 Pro: 16 or 32 GB (current Mac Studios and M2 Pro Mac minis)
  • M3 Pro: 18 or 36 GB (new 14" and 16" MBPs)
  • -----------------------------------
  • M2 Max: 32, 64, or 96 GB (current Mac Studios)
  • M3 Max: 36, 48, 64, 96, or 128 GB (new 14" and 16" MBPs)
