i asked Contacts to merge 3500 duplicates., After an hour it is still running. I am Unable to shut down because merging is running .
" Merging duplicated data" is on screen with '?' and 'cancel' both do nothing.
What to do?

Do you really need to shut down?
You could perhaps force-quit Contacts, but that could risk leaving your contacts in an incoherent state.
Instead I'd suggest you just put your mac to sleep and let it continue the process when you wake it again.
EDIT: you posted this in the Compressor forum. I will ask the moderators to move the thread to a more relevant forum.
well it finally worked, force quit, but nothing was done ! Combine.
