Got a pulsating red microphone ( full screen) on the google map icon in my I phone. I cannot get rid of it.

I was trying to use the google maps to get the GPS directions. The red Microphone ( pulsatinG0 and a notification on top left hand "speak". I scroll up and it goes to the Google map icon. Click on it and it gets back into the red Microphone How do I get rid of it so that I could get the Google maps to give me the directions that I am seeking
