Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) not available!

Using Samsung 2TB SSD, unable to find Mac OS Ext journaled, encrypted option. Used finder to encrypt, and it auto changed to APFS encrypted. Anyone else with same experience ?

Trying to encrypt Samsung SSD T7 Shield - can't choose APFS/GUID Hi all. I have a M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch 2021, on Ventura 13.2.1. I have read loads of threads but can't resolve the issue. I've just bought the Samsung T7 shield and want to erase and encrypt the drive. I don't want to use the Samsung software. I believe that I need to select APFS or GUID, but this isn't an option. When I go to erase, I can only choose from the following Formats (see pic): -Mac OS Extended (journaled) -Mac OS Extended (case sensitive) -MS-DOS (FAT) -ExFAT. I also tried right-clicking on the drive, where it does list APFS but this doesn't work (see pics). I'd welcome any suggestions and help. Thank you in advance

How do I encrypt my flash drive on Mac? Hello, I have 2022 MacBook Pro 13.3" Laptop - Apple M2 chip - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD Model: Z16S4LL/A I am having an issue with password encrypting my Sandisk USB Flash Drives. I have two flash drives one is 64gb and the other is 128gb. Neither of them I am able to password encrypt when I erase and reformat it in Disk Utility. When I go to Disk Utility and erase it only gives me these options only: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) ExFAT MS-DOS (FAT) I do not have any option for APFS Encrypted. When I try Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) it does not give me a pop up to type a password and just format it in which anyone can open it and have access. Also, it does not give me an option to change the Scheme from MBR to GPT (aka GUID Partition Map). I also have a Seagate and Lacie each over 1TB external drives and those work where I am able to password encrypt with APFS, but these USB flash drives I am not able to. If someone can help me, I would appreciate. Thank You

Macbook Pro 2012 Yosemite - There is no option to format Samsung T7 SSD into APFS and no View menu option I am using the Samsung T7 SSD and need to erase so I can use it for storage. There is no option to format the SSD as APFS, no Scheme option to choose GUID, and no View menu to show all devices. I have a Macbook Pro mid 2012 with Yosemite version 10.10.5. Is there another option that I can use to format the SSD and use it? The only options that I have are listed below: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled, Encrypted) MS-DOS (FAT) ExFAT Thank you for the help. I really need help on this so my laptop can have more storage ASAP.

What OS version were you using?

Did you format/Erase the top level, or just a container on an APFS Drive?

Apple forces APFS on SSDs at a certain OS version, can't remember for certain which.

Hmmm, I can't check Ventura or Monty right now, but here's DU in Sonoma choosing top level or a Container on a GUID SSD...

Good thing I'm hungry, I might have to eat my words! :(

But no HFS+ Encrypted‽

OS version : tried on 2 MBPs - Monterey and Ventura. Yes, erased the top level (disk) as Extended Journaled. I have another Samsung 1TB SSD which I've encrypted with Mac OS Ext option successfully couple of years ago, so this seems new. Maybe its something to do with OSV as you've stated. Here's the link i referred that states Monterey 12 would show OS journaled with encryption option, but it does not. File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Palaikymas (LT).
