MacBook Air M2 keeps shutting down when in backpack or sleeve.

So, in February I bought my MacBook and the first thing which confused me was that the laptop didn't turn on automatically when the lid was lifted for the first time. I saw a bunch of "opening" videos on YouTube where laptop would automatically turn on after lifting the lid but my assumption was that the battery was uncharged and I didn't much care about that anymore.

Then I saw a strange behaviour, once in a while when I have my MacBook in a sleeve and a backpack I hear the startup sound, like the laptop would restart. And that's not all! Sometimes when I lift the lid I see something like boot manager where I need to select startup disk or recovery options.

What do you think can cause the problem? I searched the internet and I did not see any behaviour like this so I started to worry if shall I need to give my laptop to the service.

Thanks in advance for your help and advices.

I had this issue as well with my brand new macbook and took it to the Mac store in Bali and Spain - none of them found any problem. But it kept happening. So I took it to the Apple store in the USA (where I bought it) and they sent it out for repair. They found a problem and had to replace the entire keyboard (apparently something was hitting the power button or sth). Luckily it was still covered under warranty otherwise would have cost me over $800 to fix. The problem seems to have been fixed although just now, I closed my laptop screen and instead of going to sleep, it restarted. Really frustrating that this is happening with brand new Macbooks. Hopefully you can get your issue sorted out!

Try and boot the Mac in the safe mode to see if the issue persists. If it persists in the safe mode it is caused by an external piece of software, you might want to evaluate the software installed to your Mac

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

I have the exact same issue. If i dont use it and it goes to sleep it just shuts down "unexpecxtedly" and then on reboot states that there were a problem.

Went to the store, they didnt find anything and now sending me to apple where i first need to drive 1 hour to, and wait a week. How shall people work with your lifestyle devices?

Really really dissapointing quality drop of MacBooks over the years. The newer the device the more issues they have!
