App Store doesn't install software

Title says it all. The App Store doesn't install any software and, more annoying, fails silently. I've rebooted the device.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.6

Oh, there's definitely logging. It just isn't in the App Store.

However, making any sense of those logs is going to be a significant challenge.

The most likely cause is some permissions problem. This can be caused by some 3rd party system modification software. Those thing are extremely popular and pretty much keep this huge forum in business.

I doubt that Apple Support is going to be much help. App Store doesn't have any logging because it usually doesn't fail. When I said this would be a "significant challenge", I meant that it was far beyond the capabilities of Apple Support.

You could running Disk Utility and using Disk First Aid, as described here: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support

That's unlikely to work. If you don't already have a Time Machine backup, now's the time to start.

Probably the easiest and fastest solution will be to erase your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Be careful when restoring. You may be able to restore your user files and user accounts. But you shouldn't restore any software, system settings, or "other files".

Unfortunately, the number of different things that could cause a problem like this is simply infinite. And they are all unusual, so no one is likely to say, "hey, try this". Well, they might say that but it's just random trial and error. Just keep flailing away at it until you decide to wipe the hard drive and start fresh.

OK, the title says it all.

OS Monterey 12.6.9 (21G726), App Store: Version 3.0 (1006.6.7). And when I click on an app, the blue "Get" button changes in to a green "Installing" button. And reverts back into "Get." And other than that nothing has happened. The same goes when in Safe Boot. i.e. Nothing happens. And there is no logging. No error message. Nothing. It fails silently.

And I didn't "attempt a download." The App Store should do that for me. And not fail silently if something goes wrong or can't do or find something.

There is one thing I can do: upgrade to the latest version of Monterey. I will do so and report back.
