MacBook Pro turning off due to dead battery, even though charged

My MacBook Pro has been turning off sporadically even when the battery is full. The screen goes black and the empty battery icon flashes on the screen. The only way to turn it back on is to plug in my charger. When I do so, you can see the the battery still has lots of life left in it. Anything I can do? Good old fashioned restart isn't helping.
