Is the 11 pro max the same size as the 12 pro max for the purpose of a case??

No. If you are moving to a 12 Pro Max from an 11 Pro Max, you'll need to purchase a case made specifically for the 12 Pro Max.

The 11 Pro Max dimensions are --> 158 x 77.8 x 8.1 mm (6.22 x 3.06 x 0.32 in)

The 12 Pro Max dimensions are --> 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.4 mm (6.33 x 3.07 x 0.29 in)
