Apple gift card scam

I bought an Apple gift card in an apparent scam. I realized it was a scam after I bought the card and cut off communication with the perpetrators. I kept the card and did not share the code with anyone. I actually never even opened it thinking I would just use it for a future Apple purchase. When I finally opened the card and scanned the code it said it had a zero balance. Had already been redeemed. I called Apple support and they checked the card. They said it showed that the card was purchased at a Walgreens in Minnesota and redeemed at an Apple Store 50 min later In Pennsylvania.

I live in Florida!

How can this happen? Anyone out there experience anything like this?
