2019 Imac refurb upgrade from Big Sur

I bought a 2019 refurbished imac with the Big Sur OS installed from MacSales and I'm trying to upgrade to the latest OS. I've tried installing all OS from Monterey to Sonoma with no luck. The OS installer downloads and installs with no errors, but when I check About This Mac it still shows the Big Sur OS. I have plenty of space (about 150G) and a strong internet connection. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

You're welcome.

You might also want to double check the year model to make sure that you received a 2019 and not a 2017 iMac model that can only run up to Ventura. see > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

And yes, sometimes it helps to trash an App Store Installer and replace it with a new one.

Are you trying to update using Software Update or by downloading from the App Store?

see > Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

App Store downloads go to your Applications folder and must be opened and installed from there.

If you are seeing an error while updating, try updating while in Safe Mode.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried both software update and downloading from app store - no luck. No error while downloading or installing. I have tried in safe mode as well with the same result, error free download and install but no change of OS when I check About This Mac. I'll trash the Sonoma install in my applications folder and download a new one from the app store.
