How to update my iMac to the latest macOS?

Hi. I.m trying to update my iMac to the latest OS.

Its a 21.5" late 2013, 2,7G quad core i5 with 8gb ram.

I recall a while ago, i got a box on startup to upgrade to big sur. I closed the window and forgot about it.

Since then due to home improvements, the mac was packed away and we used phones and iPads etc.

Now got it set up again, but everywhere I turn now all i get is update not available.

Is my mac not upto spec? I can't see much difference in spec between my mac and a 2014 mac?

I was trying to update my Garmi satnav, but the existing app wouldn't work and the new app will only work on big sur.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Certainly not in a position to warrant spending the money, to get this app and others to work should this occur , on a new mac.

Many thanks

" 21.5" late 2013, 2,7G quad core i5 with 8gb ram. " does qualify for " macOS Catalina is compatible with these computers

But Does Not Qualify for anything newer >> macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers

As for Latest Version of macOS >> Sonoma and yet to be released macOS 15

A New or Newer computer would be required

macOS Sequoia compatible Computers

macOS Sonoma is compatible with these computers

Some of the messages from Apple " unavailable. " are difficult to decipher

One this we agree.

As for downloading a Full Version of macOS 11 Big Sur and installing to External Drive

The installation may work IF the External Drive were connected to a Qualifying computer for Big Sur

You can try just the same.

Would not hold my breath that is will work 😩

Thanks for the info.

would be nice if it just said not compatible rather than unavailable.

on another note, I have managed to find a big sur download package.

i’m considering installing to a different external drive and see if it actually works. Have you tried anything like this.

can always unplug and set to run back on the original install.

thank you.
