Apple Pencil 2nd generation discharge rate
Hello, dear community members.
I recently purchased my first iPad along with a 2nd generation Apple Pencil, and there is something about the battery that worries me.
Firstly, when I took everything out of the box, the charge of the Apple Pencil was 5% or less (5 percent was shown by the charge widget after some attempts to start using it, and applying the Pencil to the magnetic mount, which could mean some charging time before , as I noticed the charge indication). The first question (1) - is this normal for store bought pensil? And I would also be interested to know about your cases - how much charge was there at the time of unpacking?
Secondly, I have some confusion about normal battery life. I know the official time is 12 hours, but I couldn't find any further details. Does this mean, for example, that if I draw for 12 hours straight without any break, the charge level will reach almost zero. Or does it mean something else, how was this time of 12 hours of work obtained?
I did some testing on my devices. At the moment, the experiment took 2 days, during which I noted the time of the beginning and end of active exercises with the Apple Pencil, and its charge. The result so far is this: About 6 hours (346 minutes) of active work have passed (when I either wrote, moved my hand with the pencil, or left the pencil alone for less than 5 minutes, it was usually less than a minute). The charge dropped from 100% to 23%. Penсil was discharged in rest mode (when I kept it motionless in the pencil organizer) by a total of 10% during all this time. It is noteworthy that the rate of battery discharge increased. In the first 2 hours and 20 minutes, 19% was spent (from 100 to 81), which is approximately 8% per hour. This discharge rate corresponds to the stated official operating time of 12 hours ideally. However, the next day, when I started with 76% (the penсil had managed to discharge by 5% while waiting), I reached 50% in 125 minutes of work. Thus, the discharge rate was already approximately 12% per hour, which no longer fit into the promised 12 hours of continuous operation. After that I had several more work sessions, the final one of which was today and lasted 66 minutes. At its beginning the charge was 40%, at its end the charge was 23%. Consequently, the discharge rate was already approximately 15% per hour.
Accordingly, my second main question (2) is whether such a battery discharge dynamics of a practically new (just purchased) Apple Pencil is normal?
As you can see, the pencil can hardly work for 12 hours, although the experiment of bringing it to somewhere around 5% charge is not over, and theoretically it can be assumed that some super-energy efficiency algorithms will soon be activated, and the battery will be consumed less at the same time ease of use (although then it’s strange why this was not done earlier). At this moment, for me it turns out one of two things - either the store is to blame, or Apple is a little disingenuous regarding the operating time characteristics, leaving out important things. I would be grateful to you for your answers and analysis. Regards, Oleg.
