What happens if itunes doesn't accept my password to restore my iphone from backup?

I backed up my iphone yesterday to my laptop, and then "updated" it. The update failed. I unplugged my iphone. the iphone acted like a new phone. I lost my contents...

Now I am trying to restore my iphone and itunes isn't accepting the password I used to unlock my iphone or my apple password for itunes to restore my phone. The failed log in doesn't give me an option that I can see to change my password or use another form of authentication.

If you have forgotten the password, or were not aware that encryption had been enabled, consider that it might be any computer, Apple ID, Wi-Fi password or device PIN that you've used in the past, working from the assumption that you might have reused a common password that you were using when encryption was first activated. See About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support for details.
