When I hook up my 16inch 2022 MacBook Pro to an external display, it charges the computer. Does this effect the long term life of the battery to use it when it is at full charge for long periods of time? Thanks.

No. This is not an issue.
The rule of thumb—if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on the battery only—this is how you optimize your battery charging and extend the working life of your battery by reducing the cycle count.
