MacBook Pro Battery status repeatedly switches between charging and not charging when plugged in

Video of Problem

Alright so i have a pretty weird problem with my 2020 MacBook Pro: Whenever i try to charge it and plug it in, it keeps switching between the three battery charging states "charging", "not charging" and "running on battery" very quickly and repeatedly every second or two. This can go on for more than ten minutes before it stops and the battery charges normally until its charged fully, although the time it takes for it to stop can be pretty random, sometimes it only takes a minute. I have no idea what is causing this and would be grateful for any insight and help i could receive. I first ran into this issue pretty recently, about a bit more than a month ago.

For your information:

  • i bought a new cable from apple since the one i was using previously did look pretty busted
  • i tried different chargers and power outlets in different rooms
  • i tried to reset the smc multiple times by restarting the computer
  • battery health is at 86% and the status is "normal"
  • This issue occurs on both usb c ports
  • both usb c ports look clean to me and work without issue with other devices like my iphone or usb sticks, where the connection is never interrupted

At this point i am pretty annoyed with this, since it does eventually work but im still worried by macbook might be damaged or something so i would appreciate any help i could get to fix this.

PS: i mostly charge my macbook when the battery is low (around 10%), so maybe this is instability that has to do with a low charge, since it does work after a while and then charge like it should without interruption, until i plug it in again when it is at a low charge, when this starts again.

Hi,

Try to start up in Safe mode, then normal boot could solve your issue.

Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

If it doesn't help, try to check your MacBook Pro with Apple Diagnostics if it reports battery related error.

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

If it doesn't help either, you'd better contact Apple Support or take your MacBook Pro to your local retail AppleStore, Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Pro there.

If you are near an electrical socket, how about keeping the MBP always connected to it and with the optimised charging mode enabled? At least for few days, until the optimised charging mode kicks in? If after few weeks, and if the optimised charging mode won't kick in, better take your MBP to a technical service.

Usually, it is better to avoid draining a battery less than 20%.

Hey there,

I really want to help you as I've had a similar issue. I don't know if that's an option for you but have you considered to reset your MacBook completely without saving you personal data? There could be a software problem connected to your data that causes this issue. Alternatively you could sell/deassemble your MacBook and get a Linux instead. When I switched platforms I haven't had any hardware or software problems. So maybe you want to take this option into consideration as well.

Hope this helps.

hey there, thanks for your answer. I just did a diagnostics run and it seems like there is no hardware issue at hand. I got the code "ADP000", which i think means that no issues were found, therefore my problem here probably would be something that the software is responsible for. What would you recommend me next? Should I still try the Safe Mode (And if i should: Should i wait and do it when the battery starts bugging out again or when it is functioning normally like right now) or should I contact Apple Support?
