You will need an adapter or a dock, unless you get a monitor that uses a USB-C cable.

Most monitors these days have an HDMI and/or DisplayPort connectors.

You can actually buy a USC-C to HDMI cable, or USB-C to DisplayPort cable, with the adapter built into the plug.

There are a huge verity of USB-C docks that will have an HDMI port, along with Ethernet, USB-A ports, SD card slots, headphone jacks, …, and they do not cost too much money.
