Unable to Check for Update

Trying to pair an apple watch and keep getting the message: Unable to Check for Update. Failed because you are not connected to the internet. But I am connected. Any suggestions?

My Apple Watch update has never been updated it always says failed to update. Wifi is on and it’s on charger. Never worked.
