Unknown Airtag connected with you

I recently got an alert that an unknown airtag was connected to me and even days later it still appears on my items tab in the Find My app, however I no longer have the ability to play the sound and the map hasn't been updated since. The tracking map is no longer active, and shows that it tracked me all the way to my home from work. The alert still says "First seen..." I want to figure out if the owner is still tracking me as I believe this was nefariously placed on my car. My question is, if it is still appearing on my Find My app and listed as "Items detected with you" is this Airtag still tracking me on the owners phone? Also, does the item automatically get removed from the Find My app once it is no longer tracking you or does it remain? Does the owner have the capability to stop me from seeing the active map while they continue to track me?

Most likely an Apple AirTag was placed either on you, on an article that you are carrying, or in your vehicle ... and why you are seeing this alert.

If you tried to "play a sound" and you can't hear it, it may also be possible that person removed/disabled the tag's speaker to make it difficult for you to locate it. This would, most likely, indicate that they didn't want you to easily find it. Whether or not, this was a nefarious actor, we can't tell you.

If you can still see the warning it the Find My app it is potentially still tracking you. One means to temporarily disable able this, if you cannot locate it, is to disable "Find My Network" on your iPhone. This feature is enabled by default and allows your phone to participate in Apple's Find My Network. This is how an AirTag can provide its location, by using an iPhone (participating in this network) to relay the tag's location to the Apple servers. There is where the tag's owner can "see" its location with the Find My app.

To disable Find My Network on your phone, go to Settings > Apple ID > Find My > Find My iPhone > Find My Network, and slide the slider to the left.
