Can't click within Safari

2 weeks ago I was having trouble accessing a website with Safari - said my browser was out of date. I couldn't find a way to update other than updating my OS. I updated to Sonoma 14.0, and Safari 17.0. Now browser pages lock up and won't refresh, sometimes tells me I'm out of space (definitely not out of HD space, so not sure what it's referring to). I'm also losing the ability to click within a page, even if I refresh the page. I have to close the browser to refresh.

Safari stops loading web pages Macbook Pro, Sonoma 14.6 fully updated web pages just stop loading. I have tried reload, clean history, no extensions. nothing helps. web pages half load or just stop working. I have to quit and start over only to have the same problem.
