Unable to scan on my laptop with HP 7740 but scanner works with other laptops

Hi there,

I am troubleshooting an issue I'm having with my printer/scanner at home. I have no problems printing but when I try and scan using the flatbed or the document feeder it either gets stuck at Overview Scan or No document loaded. When using a different laptop it scans right away and recognized the document in the feeder as well as the flat bed.

I've removed the device from Printers & Scanners, tried Reset Printing System, removed all drivers and re-installed the drivers, tried scanning with Image Capture as well as HP Easy Scan and updated my device to the macOS Sonoma. At the end of the day, I still get a message that says No document loaded and it times out.

Has anyone ever dealt with this and do you have any recommendations for how to remediate it?

First contact HP and make sure that device model supports your current macOS level, which appears to be 14.X. Printer makers have a habit of letting older printer models go dark without any updates for newer OS versions.

If that is the case, you have a very workable solution already on your Mac—Image Capture. It works quite well with flatbed scanners built into multi-functions devices. It sees your device's scan capabilities and shows that in an easy-to-use setting pane. This is the Image Capture control panel for our Epson ET3850:

"Scan Mode" allows choosing the 3850's document feeder:

Even though my Epson device software supports our macOS versions, I use Image Capture for scanning because it always works, something I cannot say for some device-furnished scanning software I've tried. . It is a very valuable but often overlooked Apple tool.

HP in general, and 7740 in particular, have shocking dodgy drivers + software.

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

on a network with with identical computers, OS, drivers etc. a few just don't connect reliably.

printing is fine, scanning via the EWS is fine. scanning either from the computer, or using

the "scan to computer" function on the 7740 randomly shows "no connection", while still

being able to print

using the HP print + scan doctor usually fixes the problem, might be for days or for hours,

and then the problem is back again...

Hi Allan,

Thank you for your response.

Considering this exact printer is for sale on Apple.com, I'm going to assume it is still supported. HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 All-in-One Wide Format Printer - Apple

When I try to use Image Capture it times out whenever I click on Flatbed and gets stuck at Overview Scan. Once it times out if I try to use Document Feeder then it gets stuck again and says No Document Loaded.
