My 1.5 year old 16" Macbook Pro display has gone bad

Upon startup I see the white apple logo then the display turns black, with a strange flickering lightning type glow on one side. It was just sitting open on the desk when this started and it has not been dropped, bumped or mistreated in any way. I took it into the "Genius Bar" where they tried to update the Firmware and reset the machine, but it didn't help. It works fine with an external monitor. Short of investing in a new computer or expensive repairs. Any suggestion on resolving this?

use an external monitor if you can not justify the repair.
