Removing files from iPad but not icloud

If I go to Storage on my iPad I can see there are about 6gb of files in icloud and a similar amount in Files.

I’ve got about 5gb in total left in iPad storage on my 64gb device so I’d like to get these files off my iPad but not delete in the icloud (I’ve got 34gb spare on icloud so this is not the problem).

All similar searches lead to how to reduce total icloud storage. This isn’t what I’m trying to do.

Thank you

Turn off iCloud Drive on your iPad:

Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud drive

Once off, you can delete the files on your iPad without affecting iCloud.

Yes. Once you turn off iCloud Photos, the connection is broken. You can then delete the images on your iPad. Should you turn on iCloud sync again, your photos from iCloud will download back onto the iPad.

It may be easier to optimize photos on your device (Settings > Photos) which can substantially reduce the size of your library.
