Can't save new Pages file to Desktop (Pages version 13.2 (7038.0.87)

Here's what I'm trying to do, and the response:

1.  Open Pages

2.  Open “File” Menu; select “New”

3.  Choose a template

4.  Enter text into new Pages file (filename “Untitled.pages”).

5.  Open “File” Menu again; select “Save”

6.  Change filename from “Untitled.pages” to “Newfile.pages” (or whatever)

7.  Click “Save” to put new file in Desktop Folder

*

Response:

Popup Window with warming message

“Untitled.pages” can’t be opened right now.

Your most recent changes might be lost.

(the only option is “OK”)

*

I can work around this by duplicating an existing Pages file, changing the filename and saving it, then adding the new text. I just can't create a new Pages file "from scratch." Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?

The problem seems to be a “path” issue.  If I select the appropriate path, step by step, e.g.—

iMac Pro > Macintosh HD > Users > [myusername] > Desktop

—during the “Save…” procedure (after changing the Filename in the “Save As” field), and before clicking on the Save button, the new file is saved to my Desktop, under the desired Filename.

This will even save the file as “Untitled.pages,” if I forget to rename it.

Picas:

I’m not sure what you meant by “It sounds correct.”  Did you mean “Pages seems to be performing as expected?”—Because that’s not how I expected the “New…” function to work in Pages.

In my experience on Mac, creating a new file (whether via “Duplicate” or some version of “Create new file,” depending on the app) always allows the user to (1) change the default filename and (2) save the new file under that name to the specified folder, or other location.  The problem I’m experiencing with Pages therefore came as an unwelcome surprise.

In any case, I tried Restarting in Safe Mode and then creating a new document, following the same steps that I listed in my previous post. The response was the same.
