first time one connects a bluetooth headset to a device one is required to place the headset into

pairing / discovery mode

how one goes about doing so should be in the documentation or on the website of the manufacturer of the headset,

this is a safety persuasion so others within range does not connect to your headset without your consent.

Your Bluetooth headphones can only be "paired" with a single host device at a time. As such, if already paired with your iPhone, it may be necessary to instead pair your headphones with your iPad - following the manufacturer's instructions provided with your headphones. You should note that you may need to repeat the process each time that you wish to switch devices.

Some more advanced Bluetooth headphones can pair with multiple devices - and have a switch that allows you easily change between the devices with which the headphones are paired. Apple and Beats (an Apple-brand) Bluetooth headphones can perform switching between devices automatically.
