iPhone Photo App stopped recognizing people in photos after October 20. Help!

Somehow starting on October 20, photos are no longer recognizing people in the photos. When I look at the photo details where there are clearly faces, it shows nothing. When I look at photos from October 19 and prior, faces are recognized. The people albums work in the sense that I can search for people who I’ve added over the years, however, no new photos (photos taken after 10/20) of that person are added.

I’ve reset the people and pets suggestions setting, turned on and off iCloud Photo, restarted my phone, and updated it. The weirdest part is this started on October 20 when I still had an iPhone 11 Pro Max and I now have an iPhone 15 pro max (since 11/4) and it’s still giving me the same problem.

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  3. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

It's indeed frustrating when features like facial recognition in the Photos app stop working as expected. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Check Settings: Make sure that the "People & Places" option is turned on in your iCloud settings. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, and ensure that "People & Places" is enabled.
  2. Confirm Date and Time Settings: Ensure that the date and time settings on your iPhone are accurate. Incorrect date and time settings can sometimes affect features like facial recognition.
  3. Rebuild People Album: Try rebuilding the People album. Open the Photos app, go to the "Albums" tab, scroll down to "People & Places," select the "People" album, and then tap on "Select" in the top right corner. Choose the people that are not being recognized, and then tap on "Merge" to merge them.
  4. Reset All Settings: If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Note that this will reset settings like Wi-Fi passwords and wallpaper, but it won't delete your data.
  5. Contact Apple Support: If none of the above solutions work, it's advisable to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They may be able to provide specific troubleshooting steps or escalate the issue.

Remember to back up your important data before attempting any significant changes to your device settings. If the problem persists, it's likely a software issue, and Apple Support should be able to assist you further.
