TimeMachine- The backup disk image “Mac Studio.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 19).

I keep getting the message "The backup disk image “Mac Studio.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 19)"

This has been happening since the Sonoma OS 14 update

I'm using a WD EX2 Ultra NAS as my backup disk.

When it started I re-formatted and reset the EX@ Ultra to factory settings. Started Time machine and it worked again but------got about 40% done before it stopped and the message "The backup disk image “Mac Studio.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 19)"started again.

Now i cant get it to work at all even after re-staring both the mac and the back up disc.

Others have posted ths problem in the past. i have followed all instructions and nothing works

What next.?

Mac Studio, macOS 14.1

Was that -19 error by some chance? that looks up to (readErr): I/O System Errors

'sparse bundle disk image' is a Mac Volume inside a 'foreign' File System file -- exactly what is expected on a NAS.

when you look in finder at your Network, can you still see the NAS, and does it show the Volume required by your backup?

if it randomly became unavailable, or was dismounted due to errors, that could explain why the backup did not completed.

Thank you

The problem is exactly as you have described. Could see sparsebundle in Finder but couldn’t access through Time Machine.

After powering NAS off and on repeatedly to reboot as well as other suggested solutions in various other threads with no success, as a last resort I entered the NAS dashboard and rebooted from there. Then TimeMachine started working again!

not sure if this was random luck or whether the dashboard reboot did something different.

Time will tell.

Thanks for your help 👍
