How do I make iMessage my default message. Program?

All my messages are going out as SMS messages highlighted by the color green .

iMessage is grayed out in my settings. I am not able to send an iMessage to a contact. When I try to send a message to a contact, it is telling me that I need to iMessage needs to be enabled. In settings, it is grayed out.
