Missing/Lost Photos in Camera & Camera Roll

You can try in the recently deleted folder, and in your iCloud account to see if they have been synced

Thank you for the clarification. Details can make a big difference in figuring out a problem, though that does not appear to be the case here. Camera Roll was a feature of Photos. The app has always been, to my recall, Photos.

I’ve reluctantly come to terms with the fact that I don’t have and will never have these photos. I’m more concerned with the fact of it happening at all as it has happened twice since getting the new device.

This doesn't seem to be an especially common problem. Which, of course, is going to be of little comfort to you. And, it also means I don't have any solutions ready at hand. All I can suggest is that you restore the phone to factory settings, reload your apps manually and see what happens.

This is a little confusing as you say you're running iOS 17.0.3 but Camera Roll was removed from iOS with, if I recall correctly, with the release of iOS 10. So, I wonder exactly where it is you're looking. Are you tapping on "Library" in the lower left corner?

I was running iOS 17.0.3. I have force restarted and since updated to 17.1.1 but they are still missing. It's not a storage issue as I have the 1TB phone and have 869GB available.

I would suggest, on general principle, that you update to iOS 17.1.1, the current version.

And is there a way to see if that data can be recovered?

If the pictures are not on your phone or in iCloud, I suspect they are gone. Unless, perhaps, you're also syncing them to something like Google Photos or Amazon Photos.
