New issue: Continuous notifications that Google Updater and Google LLC have added items...

Continuous notifications that Google Updater and Google LLC have added items that can run in the background.

Cannot remove Chrome - have to keep it.

Set notifications for Chrome and Google Chrome Helper to off but the pop ups from Mac continue. This is a new issue.

Did the most recent Chrome update to 120.0.6099.216 and this is now fixed.

We shut off auto updates for Chrome somewhere back in November and the pop ups continued for almost 2 months. This week saw an update was available for Chrome so we got the stand alone installer and reinstalled Chrome with the new update earlier this week. There has not been a notification since. (And it was non stop before. Literally every use of the day at some point it popped up.)

Yes. That's the bug.

This seems to have happened (for us) after the last Chrome update to 119.0.6045.159. But we've been down the roads you so correctly point out to stay off of! Seeing 1000+ me toos we'll just hang in there and wait for, hopefully, a correction.

From whom are you waiting for this correction? I don't anticipate Apple making any changes. This system is operating as designed. I don't know if Google actually did anything wrong in this case. This is a very tricky problem and very poorly understood by anyone.

If this is an Apple bug, and has a really major impact, then Apple might fix it. But it isn't a security issue. If Apple accepted responsibility for a high priority bug, you can expect a fix from Apple in two months - almost to the day.

But if a fix is needed from Google, it could show up in any of the daily updates. But if Google determines that their code isn't broken, then there will be no fix from Google either.

We did turn off the Google Updater and the LLC and the notifications continued.

That's not what you said above.

To clarify, never try to turn off anything in System Settings > Background items. A little background...

Apple really sprang this new feature on developers with no warning. Even the 4+ months warning of the beta period was insufficient for a major architectural change of this magnitude. Apple essentially gave end users the ability to directly manage the various processes and tasks that compose an app that functions as a system modification. None of these apps were ever designed for the user to be able to do this. Every single app that shows an entry in that list needs a major redesign to accommodate this new capability. (Not quite true, but as you can expect, this is really, really complicated.)

Furthermore, even though users can now disable these tasks, Apple did not take away the ability of developers to re-enable them or install new ones. So it is perfectly possible, and even reasonable, for an app that requires these background tasks to simply re-enable them or manually start them as necessary. You can't control this. Every time you launch the app, they are well within their rights to try to correct any user vandalism to their internal design.

What does that mean for you, the end user, seeing multiple notifications an hour? God only knows. Apple doesn't know. Google doesn't know. Neither company understand the problems well enough.

Can you define what you mean by "continuous"? I mean - really specifically?

These notifications are normal behaviour. You will get them any time you install 3rd party software that runs 24x7 in the background. You will also get these notifications when some 3rd party app installs that same kind of software on its own initiative. Apps from large companies like Google or Microsoft can issue new updates daily.

However, there is also a common, but poorly understood, bug where these updates never stop. You probably should never see more than one a day. But if you get dozens a day, then you are suffering from this bug.

Unfortunately, this entire architecture is poorly understood by everyone involved, including 3rd party developers who use it and even Apple, who designed it. Consequently, when it goes off the rails, nobody has any idea how to fix it. Plus, even when it is working normally, people get upset and confused and tend to try every hack ever posted on the internet to stop it. As you might expect, this only makes the problem much, much worse. It's at this point that people come here for help.

So how to fix your problem, whatever it might be, assuming it actually is broken? Hard question, to answer, that is.

My recommendation is to apply a fix proportional to the scale of the problem.

If you are only seeing these messages once or once per day, then there is no problem. It is working as designed. You can uninstall the 3rd party software. I realize you have already refused to do that. I'm still listing it as a solution for anyone else that might come along. Another option is to turn off all system notification entirely.

If you are seeing multiple notifications per day, then you can try to uninstall the 3rd party software in question and then reinstall it. That might fix it. Might not too. If it doesn't fix it, you can erase your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. When you restore, make a point to avoid restoring apps, software, system settings, or "other files". You should only reinstall your user accounts and user files. Then you can reinstall the 3rd party software. Assuming said 3rd party software is actually operating correctly (which is a BIG assumption), this is a guaranteed fix.

If your problem isn't severe, or if you need to take the extreme solution and wipe the entire machine, there are a couple of things to remember.

1) Never search the internet for solutions. Anything you see posted as a fix for this problem is wrong, wrong, wrong. I know they sound like they know what they are talking about. I know these posts get repeated and reposted everywhere. I feel your pain. It's all wrong. Trust me bro.

2) In Ventura and later, there is a new user interface in System Settings that allows you to control which login items and background tasks run. This was introduced as part of this whole new architecture. Never, never, never use that interface. Never try to disable anything. You will only make the problem worse. "But wait", you ask. "Didn't Apple create this user interface specifically for this purpose?" Yes. None of that changes anything. If you want this problem to be worse, go flip some of those switches. Most likely, it will only cause more notifications. Furthermore, it will break important functionality that these 3rd party apps need to work properly. Trust me bro.

I do not run Chrome or any Google LLC and I have never had your issue,

you can bite the bullet and chock it up to bad coding interface...

etresoft - Find everything you wrote to be so on the mark. Yes it is a problem - getting the notifications several times an hour.
