Flagged eMail doesn't exist

I'm running Sonoma 14.1.1 (23B81) on MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019.

Mail is showing that I have one eMail which is 'Flagged' but when I click on it, no eMails appear.

I've tried the 'usual' (rebuilding mailboxes, indexing the mail indices, producing a Smart Folder of eMails that are flagged, etc. but the 1 doesn't disappear.) to no avail.

Any thoughts?

 Quit Mail if it’s open.

• In ~/Library/Mail/V10/MailData, delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm.

• Your home Library folder is hidden by default. To display it, choose Finder > “Go to Folder” and then enter “~/Library

• Open Mail.

• Mail creates new Envelope Index files. This process may take a few minutes, depending on how many messages Mail is reindexing.

Thank you for the suggestion. I gave it a try, but unfortunately, it didn't resolve the issue 😞. Strangely, although it indicates there's one message, I'm unable to locate it.

Even when I flag a second email, the count goes up to 2, but the display still only shows one message.

I'm starting to contemplate whether an extreme measure like erasing the disk and reinstalling macOS, followed by a restore from backup, might be necessary. However, that feels a bit drastic at this point
