real time heart rate using apple watch

I would like to use my Apple watch to monitor my heart rate in real time while I work out and yet the BPM is only sporadically available when I check in during a Workout. It is not available often enough for me to judge whether I am staying in the zone I'm trying to maintain. I am considering buying a chest strap to pair with the watch. I live in a very remote location with no cell service when I'm working out outside and I wonder if the poor reception is due to that? Would pairing it with a chest strap help?

Found this. Free as of 01/31/24. Open the app on the watch and the phone. Then it gives a simple screen showing in big readable font on your phone and watch. No more squinting!!!!

When you use the Workout app, Apple Watch measures your heart rate continuously during the workout and for 3 minutes after the workout ends to determine a workout recovery rate. If you don't see your heart rate, check your settings.

In addition, Apple Watch measures your heart rate throughout the day when you’re still, and periodically when you’re walking (Apple Watch Series 1 or later). Since Apple Watch takes these background readings based on your activity, the time between these measurements will vary.

You can also turn on heart rate notifications, so you know if your heart rate remains above or below a chosen beats per minute (BPM), or to occasionally check for an irregular heart rhythm.

The first (and simplest) thing to try if something isn’t working right is to restart your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. If necessary (device not responding), try a forced restart. Both methods can be found here:

If that doesn't help, the next steps would be to unpair and pair your watch again and restore from the backup just created. This should result in no loss of data. It deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.

Thank you. I believe I've done everything you say - settings are checked, heart rate notifications are on, and back when I was trying to solve this before, I restarted the Watch and it's paired Iphone. I want to keep my heart rate within a certain range during a 30 minute work out and when I glance at my watch, the BPM is greyed out (most of the time.) Would pairing the watch with an external heart rate monitor show my heart rate in real time? I also wonder whether the lack of cell service has anything to do with the spotty results.
