iPad 10 and Apple Pencil

I have a teacher who has an iPad 10th (MPQ03LL/A) running 16.3. She wants to pair an Apple Pencil 1st gen with this iPad. The iPad is a USB-C port and after I connect the Pencil using the USB-C to lightning cable plus adapter, I don't get any messages on the screen.

I have an iPad Pro 9.7 model and connect the Pencil directly to it and I get a BT message asking to pair it.

Is the iPad 10 model not compatible with this Pencil?

It is compatible, but you need a special adapter for the pairing to work.

It won't work with just any cable or the Lightning adapter included with the pencil.

See:

Pair Apple Pencil with your iPad - Apple Support

The first generation Pencil is charged and paired from iPad10 using the iPad charging cable - and an Apple USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter:

New first generation Pencils now ship with this special adapter in the box along with the Pencil. However, some older stock purchased from retailers may lack the USB-C to Lightning adapter - and may instead have an older Lightning to Lightning Adapter.

For owners of older first generation Pencils, or for “old stock” new Pencils, the new special adapter can be purchased directly from Apple as an accessory.

Assuming that you are using a first generation Pencil and the correct charging Adapter and USB-C cable with your iPad10, if you continue to experience difficulties, here is one of the better troubleshooting guides:

The adapter that is pictured on the Apple site, is that a USB-C to Lightning adapter? I can't tell based on the pictures.

Yes, its USB-C to Lightning.

There are two adapters that came with the pencil.

Only one came to with the Pencil, the Lightning to deeper lightning connection to acomdate the Pencil{s longer lightning connector.

Lightning- Lightning which is smaller in length. This is the one I am trying to use with the pencil and the iPad.

That one won't work.

USB-C - USB-C which is longer in length.

You need Lightning to USB-C.
