Apple TV won’t work from Macbook when connected to TV via HDMI cable

I can watch Apple TV on my MacBook but when I hook it up to the TV via a cable it goes crazy. I click on an episode and it zooms through the time line to the end of the episode then starts the next episode and does the same thing until the whole series is finished in about 3 minutes. Has anyone experienced this? I’m new to Apple TV because I’ve always found it an outdated way to watch content having to connect a cable etc, so this just proves my theory that it doesn’t work.
