How do downloaded apple maps expire?

Before going on holiday, about 2 weeks ago, I downloaded a number of areas in Apple Maps for use when off-grid. Having arrived at my destination, I found that all my downloaded maps had "expired". That really makes them rather useless. Is there some sort of time limit for downloaded maps?
