boot disk for MacBook Pro M3 pro chip

Has anyone tried to create a boot disk for 14.1.1 23B2082 M3 only on a MacBook Pro M3 pro chip? i get this error.... Failed to extract AssetData/boot/Firmware/Manifests/InstallerBoot/* from update

bundle

The bless of the installer disk failed.

Mac support has no answer. I am 100% certain the install package is correct, and the commands to create the disk are correct. I am also 100% certain that the external boot drive is good and that it is formatted properly. Any help would be appreciated

On a M2 Machine - sorry the best I can do until the next Trade IN

Downloaded the Full Version 14.1.1. via Terminal - All OK

Reformatted 128 GB External Drive as HFS Journaled / GUID

Attempted the Terminal command >>

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Failed on first attempt

Checked System Setting >> Privacy & Security >> Full Disk Access

Had to Add Terminal to Full Disk Access

see below >>

p.phillips@Ps-Mac-Mini-M2 ~ % sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Password:

Ready to start.

To continue we need to erase the volume at /Volumes/MyVolume.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: y

I've been receiving this error when attempting to create a bootable macOS USB installer for both Intel & Apple Silicon Macs (M1 & M2) for macOS 12.x, 13.x, and 14.x using any host Mac & host OS. It seems to occur no matter which patch level of the installer I attempt to use (using the command line "softwareupdate" utility to download specific point releases).

I only noticed this recently even though a few weeks ago I was able to successfully create both 13.6.1 and 14.1 USB installers without any issues.

I did report the issue here:

So 14.1.2 came out today, and I can't make a USB on this M3 MPB at all. Not for the betas, or the new release.

Tried this on 14.1.2 just now:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

Ready to start.

To continue we need to erase the volume at /Volumes/Untitled.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: y

Failed to extract AssetData/boot/Firmware/Manifests/InstallerBoot/* from update bundle

The bless of the installer disk failed.

Is anyone able to get this to work?

Yeah, it won't work when the USB stick is directly connected. Also tried when the USB C stick was directly connected - and the ONLY thing connected.

Looks like the "nuke and pave" re-install technique isn't really valued for Apple Silicon since the recovery always possible holding down the power button. (Coming from windows, where nuke and pave was routine for reinstall)
