Hi I can’t seem to do a SMC reset on my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (A1278). Tried the recommended method of holding down shift control option and the power button but that just powers on the macbook instantly.

Either one of the keys is bad, or you performed the SMC incorrectly so that the power button just powered on the laptop. I personally like to perform an Option Boot and let the laptop sit at the Apple boot picker menu. Then when I perform the SMC Reset, the laptop should immediately power off when the correct keys are pressed for the SMC Reset (Left Shift + Left Control + Left Option + Power Button).

You must use the built-in keyboard to perform the SMC Reset since an external keyboard will not work.
